The Price of Freedom

"The price of freedom is eternal vigilance." This quote from Thomas Jefferson, though short, presents a number of ideas. It implies that freedom is not free. That government, regardless of how benevolent it may appear, is ever seeking to usurp power and limit freedom. That the ultimate guard of freedom is the people through eternal vigilance. Since simply watching the government drag the people into tyranny would be foolish, there is also an implication that action must follow.
